Kaelyn Donovan, a five-year-old girl, spent her day playing outside. When the little girl came home, her mother, Kristen, noticed she had a small bruise on her knee. Kristen didn’t give it much thought and wished it would go away.
Kristen and her husband received a call from school saying their daughter had a fever. The couple took Kaelin to the pediatrician. She was given antibiotics to treat what the doctor assumed was a spider bite.
However, the little girl showed no improvement. Her worried parents decided to take her to a medical center for a second opinion.
They discovered that a black widow spider was responsible for their daughter’s bruise. What appeared to be a bruise-like discoloration on Kaelin’s knee was caused by spider venom.
Parents don’t understand how a black widow spider can be found in Massachusetts. They warn other parents not to underestimate those minor bruises or accidents in the future.
