Stephen’s email is done early in the morning when most people are still sleeping or at work. Nothing could have prepared this postman for the fateful experience that would turn him into a hero.
One morning, Stephen saw a two-year-old wandering outside his house unsupervised. There were no parents, older siblings, or babysitters.
It was an immediate red flag and Stephen knew something had to be done. In fact, the postman saw this boy several times on his way, but the child’s mother was always present.
Stephen quickly got out of his mail truck and asked the boy about his mother. The child looked frightened and nervous. When asked where his mother was, the 2-year-old pointed to her house.
After making sure the baby was safe, Stephen rushed inside to make sure the baby’s mother was okay. Unfortunately, Stephen found the mother hunched over a stroller. Stephanie, the child’s mother, was completely unconscious.
Stephen tried to get the woman’s attention, but she wasn’t responsible. He called an ambulance at home and waited impatiently for it to arrive. Stephen did not leave the house until Stephanie and her baby were safe.
Stephanie was taken to the local hospital where she received appropriate medical attention. She eventually made a full recovery. However, the situation could have been much worse if Stephen had not called the ambulance. Stephanie had a bad reaction to some of her medications.
The United States Postal Service presented Stephen with a rare life-saving award. Without Stephen’s efforts, the fate of Stephanie and her child would have been much worse.
