In June 2015, Global News reported that a video of a 60-year-old retired teacher, Shirley Clements, had gone viral. The video featured her dancing alongside her students to “Uptown Funk” and showcased her impressive hip-hop and breakdancing skills. Clements had created the Outbreak Dance Competition about 20 years prior to promote hip-hop and breakdancing.
Clements had been passionate about dancing since she was four years old, and it was only natural for her to become a dance teacher. She found the perfect fit teaching dance to high school students and believed that everyone should have the opportunity to take classes in something they’re passionate about. She provided a welcoming space for her students, which led many to call her “Mama Clements.”
Although Clements was proud of her students and their skills, she also wanted to showcase her own talents. She wasn’t trying to steal the show during the performance with her students, but that’s exactly what she did. In an effort to highlight her own hip-hop skills, she did something she knew her students wouldn’t forget.
Clements’ story is a reminder that age should not limit our ability to pursue our passions and showcase our skills. She serves as an inspiration to her students and anyone else who may be hesitant to pursue their dreams. Clements’ dedication to promoting dance and providing a welcoming space for her students is a testament to her character and her impact on those she taught.
