Amelia lost her balance and fell when one of the hiking poles she was using broke. He first fell about 300 feet through a snowy part of the mountain. Then he hit a rock and slid another 300-400 feet.
As she sat down to check on her injuries, Amelia quickly realized she was not alone. She saw a very large white animal nearby and thought it was a white wolf. I started to panic until the “wolf” approached and realized he had his collar around his neck. He was a white husky and he was there to help!
Amelia read the name on the card – Nanook. She and Nanook drove on and stopped to set up camp for the night. Amelia later found out that Nanook was a guide dog, which explains why her furry companion never left her!
Amelia left the next day, just 24 hours after her fall, to attempt to cross a nearby river. Unfortunately, the current in the river was stronger than she thought and he repeatedly drugged her underwater. Nanuk got up and grabbed her back belt and pulled it out!
After returning to Earth, Amelia used a GPS device known as the SPOT beacon. This device alerted Alaska State Troops to their emergency, and they were able to quickly rescue her and Nanook afterwards. She credits her survival to Nanook, who helped her get to safety when she needed it. She also thanks the troops for their quick response time!
