Upon the reunion of Pori and Tana, the two elephants shared a touching moment, intertwining their trunks through the bars of their enclosures before finally meeting in a communal outdoor space within the elephant house.
Dr. Dennis Müller, the director of the Bergzoo, expressed the significance of Pori’s arrival in Halle, describing it as a crucial advancement in modern elephant care via a Facebook post in German.
The zoo’s detailed Facebook post chronicled the encounter, highlighting the elephants’ communication through characteristic sounds resembling thunder rumbles. Following trunk contact, they engaged in a few turns and a brief separation, only to reunite shortly afterward, calmly tossing sand on their backs.
The heartening scene extended beyond the mother-daughter duo, as Tana’s daughters, Tamika (4) and Elani (1), experienced their first meeting with their grandmother. The zoo described the moment as a visibly joyful event for the four elephants.
Fortunate visitors who witnessed the event observed touching scenes between the granddaughters and their grandmother, with Elani even attempting to drink from Pori’s teats.
The zoo, proud to be the sole facility in Germany where African elephant cows from a single mother line coexist, emphasized the significance of their initiative.
