A Mexican mayor decided he wanted to be a real leader. Carlos Tina, the mayor of Cuauhtemoc, dressed up as a homeless man in a wheelchair. He veiled his look in a sweatshirt with sunglasses. Mayor Tina was inspired to do so after receiving complaints from local citizens that the homeless and disabled were not receiving proper care from local agencies.
“I’ve been planning this for two months,” he told Milinho, according to Mexico News Daily. “I decided to do it because I didn’t know who to believe, the citizens or my colleagues.”
Then Mayor Tina began driving around the city himself, stopping at all major agencies aimed at helping the persecuted. When Mayor Tina moved from one agency to another, he was shocked at the treatment he received.
He was denied a free meal that should have been given to someone in his condition and ignored by every government employee he encountered.
Mayor Tina’s last stop was his private office, where he asked to speak to the mayor. After learning that the mayor was not there, he asked to speak to the next commander.
The mayor’s support staff fired him and told him to leave. At that moment, Mayor Tina stood up and angrily took off her disguise. After the ordeal, Mayor Tina called a meeting to explain her experience and express her disappointment.
“I’m angry with the people who work there and get paid because they treat the citizens badly,” he said. “I made it very clear to them and told them that I didn’t want to hear any more about the mistreatment they had inflicted on anyone.”
Mayor Tina is currently implementing sweeping positive changes to ensure that no one in need is treated the way they were while in disguise again.
