The man walked into the cafe and didn’t notice the dog.
Surveillance footage recorded the man abandoning the dog. A note can also be seen hanging from the collar that was around the dog’s neck.
Santa City Animal Services received a call alerting them to an animal spell outside Dunkin Donuts on Boxing Day 2017. The caller informed them that a man had parked a Chevy car outside the cafe and left a dog there. Security footage will later confirm the caller’s version of events.
The caller said the dog wandered outside the pastry shop in a confused state and received no help from the man who brought her there.
The man asked for a cup of coffee inside the store. The dog tried to follow the man inside but closed the door in his face.
The handwritten note placed inside the dog’s collar was two lines long. The first line says “I am free”. The second line says “I have children”.
It is not uncommon for a dog or other animal to be abandoned on the side of the road or dumped elsewhere and left to fend for itself.
Worse still, according to the ASPCA, more than 1.5 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year when there aren’t enough shelters or adoptive homes to meet their needs.
Luckily for the dog in this story, she was adopted from the shelter and is currently doing well.
According to the police update, the man who dumped her has now come forward. He had to pay a fine for neglecting the animal, as well as a surrender fee to the animal shelter where the dog is being treated.
