As we age, certain unavoidable circumstances come with it. For one elderly couple, this meant they could no longer live independently. Their son, Schon, and his wife, Jeannie, decided to take action and create a space for them in their own home.
Schon’s parents were growing frailer by the day. His father was becoming forgetful, while his mother had a fall and broke her shoulder. Schon began searching for homes with finished mother-in-law suites, but he couldn’t find one that was suitable for his parents. So, he and his wife came up with a plan to build a custom mini home in their current house.
The couple decided to renovate their basement and make room for his parents to move in. They removed their recreational items such as a pool table, instruments, and karaoke area to create space. They blew a hole in the basement wall to create a separate entrance and made sure the area was safe and comfortable for his parents.
Schon’s mother had been leaning on his father for support, and neither could live alone without the other. Schon and his wife didn’t want their parents to end up in a nursing home, so they took matters into their own hands.
Schon explained, “We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind. One can’t live alone without the other and we didn’t want either one to end up in a nursing home.”
Thanks to Schon and Jeannie’s hard work and dedication, the elderly couple now has a safe and comfortable place to call home. It’s heartwarming to see families come together and take care of one another during difficult times.
