Midshipman Tuohy and his companions reimagined the lyrics of “Uptown Funk” to create their personalized version, titled “Naptown Funk,” a nod to the nickname for Annapolis. After obtaining approval from the city to film, Tuohy and friends selected Midshipman 2nd Class Liam Gregory as their leading figure.
With a tight schedule, the crew had only four hours to film, as they had to attend a Navy football game, a mandatory event for all midshipmen.
In the meticulously crafted music video, uniformed men and women joyfully paraded through Annapolis streets, executing a choreographed dance. Scenes were also captured in a salon to mirror the style of the original “Uptown Funk” video.
In the video’s climax, a brass section and drummer joined the team on the street, issuing a challenge to other Naval teams in San Diego, Norfolk, and Chicago. Tuohy skillfully showcased the beauty of Annapolis with aerial shots in both the beginning and end of the high-quality video.
“Naptown Funk” provided the team an opportunity for enjoyment, self-praise, and a display of their artistic prowess. While some participants may have been new to such efforts, for Rylan Tuohy, this was just his latest production. The talented midshipman has previously worked on other spirited videos, known as spirit spots, and collaborated on humorous productions for the annual Army-Navy game.
With the same energy and fun as the original song, “Naptown Funk” not only entertained but also showcased the distinctive talents of Annapolis’ Naval students. Their creativity, collaboration, and spirit exemplify the remarkable achievements possible when they come together
