Members of the US military are heroes by definition.

These brave men and women serve valiantly every day, sacrificing their safety and the joy of normalcy to ensure our nation can prosper and we can enjoy the security that comes with living in a free country.

As such, veterans deserve all the honor and respect we can give them. A group of Marines from Illinois recently had the opportunity to show their appreciation for a Vietnam War veteran.

Lou Zezoff of Granite City, Illinois, was having dinner with his wife at a local Cracker Barrel when a Marine stopped by their table. The Marine, holding Lu’s hand, thanked the Vietnam veteran for his sacrifice during the war.

While Lu was grateful for the Marines’ respect, he was somewhat surprised by the interest. Soon, three Marines stopped by Lu’s table, and they all thanked him for his service.

When Lu and his wife finished dinner, he asked the waiter for the check. According to Belleville News-Democrat, Lou knew something was wrong when the waiter grinned and said, “It’s your lucky day.” The waiter revealed that the Marines had paid for Lou’s dinner.

Grateful for the deed, Lu went to the Marines’ table. Lou hugged one of them, telling the group that they didn’t have to pay for his dinner and that this kind work from before was more than enough. The Marines were adamant, however, and insisted on paying for Lu’s meal to express their gratitude.
