In the popular TV show “America’s Got Talent,” the coveted golden buzzer sends performers straight to the live shows, bypassing several elimination rounds. And in June 2022, judge Sofia Vergara used her power to push the button for an all-female dance group from Lebanon called The Mayyas.
According to Vergara, she felt something special when watching the trailblazing group’s performance. “It’s just something that happens to you and you feel goosebumps and you feel something with that person. And then, it happened to me,” she said.
For The Mayyas, being given the golden buzzer was more than just a dream come true. They saw it as a win for women everywhere. “We have been living in a daily struggle in Lebanon between the inflation, the economical crisis, the blast, and so much more,” they shared with People magazine. “We can work harder, we can fight harder, we can adapt to everything happening to us. We are alive, we shouldn’t take it [for] granted and we can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before we decide to be happy.”
Vergara expressed her excitement about being on this journey to success with The Mayyas. “I would be so honored to empower you even more in this journey because you deserve it and I want to be part of this,” she said.
For The Mayyas, receiving the golden buzzer from a strong, beautiful woman like Sofia Vergara was an absolute honor. “And this is what Mayyas is all about: women [and] women empowerment. We hope we won’t let her down in the next rounds,” they said.
The Mayyas will now move on to the live show rounds, thanks to Sofia Vergara’s golden buzzer. And they will undoubtedly continue to inspire and empower women around the world with their incredible performances.
