This attack was something they took very seriously. They believe it happened because of the adoption that took place. They recently adopted two daughters with Down syndrome. Ann says that day changed her life forever. Her two sons, ages 6 and 7, decided to shoot a video, advocate and speak out on behalf of their sisters.
With the help of their parents, they went out into the public and demanded that everyone stop using the word “retarded”. Everyone Account heard about their video and asked for permission to share it. The Hollis family couldn’t have been happier for this to happen.
The story was quickly found all over the internet, with the original youtube video currently having over a million views.
In the video you will see the boys holding index cards. On the cards read “Meg and Alina”, they are their sisters. They use index cards to convey their message throughout their video.
The first commented card reads “Realizing” with “Re” underlined at the beginning of the sentence. This is done to point out the word “retard” and to show others that they need to stop using this word when referring to people with Down Syndrome.
They go on to explain the things their sisters learn and can do and how “retarded” doesn’t describe them at all. They then went into detail, describing their sisters and characters, and giving viewers a glimpse into their lives. The boys did their best to prove that the stereotypes surrounding Down syndrome were not true.
After the boys complete the cards, the video appears with a photo of their entire family. At this time, the brothers ask you if you are ready to help their sisters.
They want viewers to help by using words of love instead of hate. They want to share love, hope and respect. They explain that their sisters are not “backward” as you will see at the end of the video.
Can you believe someone did this to their house? It’s really sad that this family had to go through this, but at least they’re making something positive out of it.
